Q: What is biological infiltration and why is it important?
A:A brand new aquarium set up does not have sufficient bacteria to support more than a few small fish. These fish will produce nitrogen in the tank by fecal matter. A by-product of this decomposing is ammonia, which is very toxic to fish, generally causing cloudy water. This ammonia will be broken down by "Aerobic Bacteria to Nitrite and then to Nitrate. This process will take four to six weeks to grow a sufficient amount to keep your tank crystal clear and able to support its' inhabitants. A Monthly 20% water change will insure low Nitrates and clean water circulation which will help the tank to maintain its bacterial balance.
